The 5 Biggest Mistakes High School Baseball Players Make in Recruiting

Mar 17, 2025

Getting recruited isn’t just about talent—it’s about strategy. Many high school players miss out on opportunities because they don’t understand the process. Here are the 5 biggest mistakes players make and how to avoid them:

1. Waiting Too Long to Start the Process

Many players think they can wait until junior or senior year to start reaching out to college coaches. Wrong. Recruiting happens earlier than ever, and college coaches are tracking players as early as 8th and 9th grade. Start now.

2. Thinking “If I’m Good, Coaches Will Find Me”

Talent alone isn’t enough. You need exposure. Colleges don’t magically discover players; you have to actively email coaches, attend showcases, and post highlight videos online.

3. Not Knowing What Colleges Are the Right Fit

Many players only aim for D1 schools without considering D2, D3, NAIA, or JUCO options. Be realistic and research programs where you can actually play. Getting on the field is better than sitting on the bench.

4. Poor Communication With Coaches

When a coach emails or texts you, respond quickly and professionally. Delayed or sloppy communication makes a bad impression. Also, personalize your messages—don’t copy and paste the same email to every school.

5. Ignoring Academics

Your GPA matters. A high GPA and strong SAT/ACT scores make you more recruitable and increase scholarship opportunities. Many schools won’t even look at you if you don’t meet academic requirements.
